About Samana and surroundings
The town of Samana, 20 minutes to the west, is a beautiful and peaceful place with approximately 15,000 easy-going people. These friendly Dominicans live their lives with tourism, agriculture and fishing activities…all set to the beat and rhythms of Merengue, Bachata and Salsa music. The city is graced by a scenic 2 kilometers Malecon, or seaside walking promenade. It is great for strolling by the picturesque marina filled with sailboats and fishing boats. It is a perfect stopover for boats traveling from the United States to the rest of the Caribbean. The harbor is well protected and it has well stocked grocery stores, restaurants, and gift shops. As stated above, many cruise ships anchor in the safe waters between the city harbor and Cayo Leventado.
Las Galeras to the east is a small village with a true Caribbean lifestyle. It has beautiful beaches and plentiful ecological areas to explore. Playa Rincon is nearby and considered by many to be one of the most beautiful beach areas in the world. Las Terrenas to the west, on the northern side of the Samana Peninsula, is known for its stretches of beautiful sandy beaches and great restaurants. The driving time to the new El Catey – Samana International Airport from Samana is approximately 1 hour to the west. The driving time to Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, is approximately 2 hours to the south.
